A record turnout in the ballroom!
The April edition of the monthly social gathering ‘In the Ballroom’ on Thursday 5th saw a record turnout with 80 teas being served to the guests by Unlocking Warwick volunteers.
The ballroom was filled to capacity for an exchange of old photos of Warwick, and a presentation by Christine Shaw of the Warwick War Memorial project, which seeks to find the stories behind the 358 names on the memorial of local people who died in WWI. A special website is about to be launched: www.warwickwarmemorial.org.uk
If you have information or pictures of the Warwick Fallen from the 1914-18 war, please let us know: info@warwickwarmemorial.org.uk
During the afternoon, old postcards, letters and pictures from family albums were passed around, and there were plenty of reminiscences about how Warwick has changed over the years.
As usual, there was time to chat and meet new people over tea, coffee and cake. The next edition of the informal social club, “In the Ballroom”, will be on May 3rd when Trevor Langley will talk about the amazing construction of our local canals, including the Hatton Flight of locks on the Grand Union.
Then on 14th June, there will be a talk about the Warwickshire Yeomanry, the volunteer cavalry regiment who performed heroic deeds in many conflicts, including in WWI.
“In the Ballroom” is organised by Unlocking Warwick on behalf of Warwick Town Council, and is supported by the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’ and the King Henry VIII Endowed Trust.
