A Tea Dance Tutorial
On April 11th, the first of a monthly series of Tea Dances in the Court House Ballroom was a chance for beginners to learn, or re-learn, some ballroom dancing steps, to get some enjoyable exercise, and to meet new people.
Dance Director Chris and his colleague Barbara from the local Majestic Dance Club which meets regularly in Warwick’s Newburgh School hall, showed guests the footwork and techniques for some popular ballroom dances, including the social foxtrot and the waltz. Then the guests were able to try them out to some classic ballroom music.
‘I really enjoyed it’ said one guest who said she hadn’t danced ballroom since her schooldays. ‘But we could have done with a few more men. I had to lead half the time! Maybe they are all down the pub watching sport’. So come on you men, there are willing partners ready for the next Tea Dance on Tuesday 9th May, from 2pm to 4.30pm.
Councillors and volunteers served tea and cake in the interval. The Tea Dances are organised by Warwick Town Council and from May will cost just £2.50 to attend, to cover costs. It’s hoped they will attract local people who may not get out very much, and who would enjoy meeting new people over a cup of tea or coffee with some cake, and trying some gentle ballroom dancing with some expert coaching beforehand.
If you know of someone in Warwick who would particularly appreciate coming to a Tea Dance in the centre of town, please spread the word. Here are a few pictures of the tutorial in the ballroom with Dance Director, Chris. Click on each picture to see it full-size.
