Beautiful Flower Arrangements
On April 10th there was a fascinating demonstration at the Court House by Bev Cox on how to make flower arrangements for your home that last and have interesting designs.
She showed how you can shape tulip flowers if you want them to be a larger bloom, and explained that tulips are the only flower that keeps growing after being cut. She warned that daffodils and narcissi are slightly toxic and should not be mixed with other flowers.
She suggested a small drop of bleach and a spoonful of sugar in a vase will guard against bacteria affecting the plants and provide them with food.
Other useful tips were to try to avoid using oasis because it is not biodegradable and after disposal, particles can get into the food chain. Scrunched up wire or cellophane can be used to support flowers in a vase. She suggested cutting stems diagonally so that there is more of the inside of the stem is able to draw up water.
There was a free raffle to decide who could take home the displays she made. And after the usual tea and cake, the quiz was all about garden flowers.
The next social gathering ‘In The Ballroom’ will be on Wednesday 8th May, when Bill Devitt will present ‘Bling’ – Diamonds, Dunes and Deserts – Tales from a global traveller. It costs just £3 to include the tea. It’s a popular event so please reserve you place at the Visitor Information Centre. 01926 492212. info@visitwarwick.co.uk
