Change of Speaker May 10th

This month’s edition of the social gathering, ‘In The Ballroom’, on Wednesday May 10th, will now feature a talk about the wildlife and history of the Warwickshire Avon by local writer, Rick Thompson.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the scheduled talk on surnames by Anthony Paulton-Smith has been postponed until 8th November.

Rick’s new book, entitled ‘A River Avon Year’, follows the course of the river known as ‘Shakespeare’s Avon’, month by month from its source in Northamptonshire to its confluence with the Severn at Tewkesbury. It describes the wildlife along the way as the seasons change, and relates the stories of the towns that have grown up on its banks at ancient crossing points.

There are abbeys, castles, medieval bridges and battlefields where the course of English history was altered and the Avon ran red with blood.

There will be a book-signing after the talk, and the usual tea, coffee and cake, and a topical quiz devised by Helen Fellows. Numbers are limited, so please reserve your place in advance at the Visitor Information Centre: 01926 492212. ‘

‘In The Ballroom’ costs just £3 per person, including the tea.
