Comic Songs in the Ballroom

Guests at the September edition of our social tea ‘In The Ballroom’ were greatly entertained by Trevor Langley who presented ‘An Encounter with Flanders and Swann’.

He told the story of the lifelong friends who became hugely successful as a musical duo, with hundreds of shows in the West End, on Broadway, and on many overseas tours.

The guests were encouraged to sing along with familiar favourites such as the Gnu, Armadillo, and Hippopotamus songs. And Trevor reminded everyone of the comic songs tradition embraced by many stars of the thirties to eighties, such as George Formby, Joyce Grenfell, Bernard Cribbins and Victoria Wood.

There was the usual tea, coffee and cake served by volunteers, and Helen’s picture quiz which featured films and film stars. One guest got all the answers right, which is unusual. It turned out he had served in the navy, and the crew watched a film every night they were at sea – so he knew the subject pretty well!

‘In The Ballroom’ takes place in the Court House every second Wednesday of the month from 2pm. It is extremely popular, so make sure you reserve your place at the Visitor Information Centre: 01926 492212.
