The final Court House Tours of this year’s summer season will be conducted by Unlocking Warwick volunteers on Sunday 9th October, as part of the Warwick Words History Festival.

These free tours of the restored Jury Street Court House and its immediate surrounds last 45 minutes, and tell of the history of the buildings that have occupied this central site, and serve as an introduction to the development of the county town since its founding over a thousand years ago.

The tours will start at 11am and 2pm, and with numbers limited for practical reasons, they are conducted on a first-come basis, with guests asked to assemble in the Pageant Garden behind the Visitor Information Centre.

In between these tours next Sunday, from 12.30 to 1.30pm, the Warwick Court Leet will be in the Court House ballroom giving a free presentation of their history and present-day activities.

The Court Leet has been an integral part of Warwick life since the Middle Ages.

At one time it was a fundamental part of the administration of law in the town, with officers checking that food was fit for sale, that ale had not been watered-down, and that the local environment was safe for citizens – activities that continue to this day in a purely ceremonial role.
