Great activities planned for 2018

We meet every two or three months to plan community activities

The Unlocking Warwick volunteers held their first meeting of 2018 on 29th January to plan activities during the year. It’s clearly going to be a busy year with plenty of enjoyable community events based on the Jury Street Court House.

The monthly social gathering ‘In the Ballroom’ has become extremely popular with its mix of talks, activities, quizzes, and of course tea, cake and time to talk. This year ‘In the Ballroom’ will happen on the first Thursday of every month – easy to remember – from 2pm to 4.30pm. No need to book, just turn up for a friendly afternoon which will stir your grey matter.

To improve audibility in the ballroom during the talks and demonstrations, we plan to get some radio microphones that clip on to a speaker’s clothes.

The volunteers will also be helping with monthly Tea and Dance Lessons in the ballroom, organised by the Town Council. These will take place on the second Tuesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm.

Unlocking Warwick is a non-profit association of volunteers

Professional dance teachers will lead guests through ballroom classics. No experience required. No partner required. Just team up with someone else. Then chat over tea and cake.

Our free Court House Tours will continue on selected Saturdays through the summer period, introducing visitors and locals to some of Warwick’s rich history. Check the dates in the Events section of this website.

The meeting decided to hold a Summer Barn Dance this year. Probably in July. That should be fun.  Live music, country food, and a caller explaining the moves of the traditional dances. Details to be announced. Keep an eye on the website and our ‘What’s On in Warwick’.

And there’s a big new project taking shape to mark the centenary of the WWI Armistice. We want to discover the stories behind the 358 names on the Warwick War Memorial, and create a special website which will be a permanent resource for students , writers and local people. More details to come.

‘In the Ballroom’ on the first Thursday of the month often features a picture quiz.

We’ll also hope to find time to produce another courtroom drama involving intriguing cases heard in Warwick in years gone by.

The next meeting of the volunteers will be on Tuesday 10th April in the Council Chamber of the Court House in Jury Street at 7pm.
