Helping Warwick after the Great Fire

After enjoying a Court House Tour with Unlocking Warwick, local residents Colin and Priscilla Sharp revealed an interesting document they had unearthed while researching their family history. Coincidentally it connected Warwick with the village in Kent which has been the home of their ancestors for generations.

In the Parish Chest at Farningham near Sevenoaks, was a record of the money sent to Warwick by the parishioners in 1695, in response to a nationwide appeal for funds to help the 250 families left homeless by the Great Fire the previous year.

The documents show that the village gave two pounds and ninepence, which was a considerable sum in 1695. You can read the full story under ‘Warwick Stories’ in the Exploring Local History section of this website.
