Making an Advent Ring

How to make an Advent Ring and other beautiful Christmas decorations was demonstrated at this month’s social gathering ‘In the Ballroom’ at the Court House on 9th November.

Expert flower-arranger Kate Sargent brought samples of greenery from her garden and showed how to cut them into sprigs and create atable display of contrasting foliage based on a ring of ‘Oasis’ as a base for four candles. Traditionally, one candle is to be lit for each of the four weeks of Advent.

Pine cones sprayed with silver or white, and some small baubles were added to the table display, with some small ribbons twisted into bows, and it was finished off with some small white chrysanthemums. The ring was completed in just half an hour, and the various elements cost very little.

Guests were then able to have a go themselves, following instructions on how to fix everything firmly to a base with thin threads of wire. Kate’s display was then raffled off, and visitors enjoyed the usual tea, coffee and cake with time to chat.

The next social gathering on December 7th will continue the seasonal theme with Christmas carols. ‘In the Ballroom’ is organised each month by Unlocking Warwick for the Town Council. It will continue in 2018 on the first Thursday of each month from 2pm – 4.30pm. The cost is just £2 and all local residents are welcome to come along to hear a talk, take part in activity, and make new friends. (Click on the pictures to see them full-size).
