Our Court House Tours on July 1st were attended by a group of visitors from Chile, and a family who until recently have been living in Lahore, where the temperature when they left was 49 degrees celsius!

It was pleasantly cool in Warwick for simultaneous tours conducted by Karen and Rick. The visitors heard about the building of the Court House by architect Francis Smith after the Great Fire of Warwick in 1694, and its refurbishment and reopening in 2014, marking the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Warwick as a fortified town by Athelflaeda, the ‘Lady of the Mercians’.

These monthly tours are free, and last just 45 minutes, with a look around the outside of the elegant building, which 60 years ago the travel writer Nikolaus Pevsner described as ‘Warwick at its best!’, and a peep inside the Council Chamber and the Regency ballroom.

The guides try to suggest places visitors should see on a day out in Warwick.

These might include the Warwickshire Yeomanry Museum in the basement of the Court House, The Saturday market, the recently refurbished Market Hall Museum, and the Lord Leycester Hospital at Westgate.

There is a Town Trail which visitors can follow to see the main features of this historic county town. A map is available from the Visitor Information Centre.

The next Court House Tour will be on Saturday August 5th at 11am. There’s no need to book, but numbers must be limited for practical and safety reasons, so it is always a case of first come first served.

You can check if the tour is going ahead as planned by calling the Visitor Information Centre on 01926 492212.
