Warwick during the War
Just before Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, Unlocking Warwick volunteer Edwina McConville gave a talk in Leamington covering a brief history of Warwick and the town’s role during World War II.
She was responding to a request from a group of visually impaired ladies and gentlemen who meet regularly at Chandos Court. They were very interested to hear about the work of the Unlocking Warwick volunteers, and some of the senior members were able to share a few memories of the Warwick in days gone by. One gentleman of 88 remembered his aunt who lived in ‘the big house at the bottom of Jury Street’. He said that when Montgomery was in town, he would visit there to get smartened up. He also said his father, a friend of the Earl of Warwick’s chauffeur, would be asked to help get the Earl into bed after a late night out!
If you have a local organisation that would like a short talk about Warwick’s past, email the Secretary at info@unlockingwarwick.org and we’ll see if one of the volunteers can come along.
