West Street and Westgate

Warwick’s West Street is full of historical interest. A group of residents have been researching some of its stories from the past for an occasional newsletter.

Here is their introductory summary about West Street, which from medieval times grew up outside the protective walls of the old town and still has some Elizabethan buildings. The Great Fire of Warwick in 1694 started opposite the Westgate, but the fierce westerly wind drove the fire into the centre of town and West Street was unaffected.

We will add snippets from the West Street history group as they find interesting stories. If you have a Warwick Story about the town in the past, send it to info@unlockingwarwick.org
