A Year in Chains

The May session of our tea-and-talk ‘In The Ballroom’ was treated to a fascinating account of her year as Mayor of Warwick by Cllr. Jackie D’Arcy.

The following week she would be handing over the position to Cllr. Simon Pargeter at the annual Mayor Making ceremony in St. Mary’s Church.

Cllr. D’Arcy explained the history and significance of her robes of office, the two mayoral chains, and the two maces – symbols of authority. The Mayor is also the ‘Lord of the Leet’, representing the ancient Court Leet that was established by Royal Charter in the 16th century, and would keep law and order and ensure honest trading.

The Mayor said that as well as chairing all the full Town Council meetings during her tenure, she had attended countless events, supporting schools, charities and businesses in an incredibly busy year.

She said she had been proud to represent the county town, and to discover so many community groups providing help to those who need it.

After the presentation, there was tea, coffee and a selection of cakes, and the answers to Helen’s picture-quiz.

In The Ballroom’ takes place at 2pm on the second Wednesday of each month and costs just £3 per person. It is very popular, so you must reserve your place at the Visitor Information Centre: 01926 492212
